The Churdan public library will host Mitch Nicholson, creator of Abandoned Iowa , on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 pm.
Have you ever driven past an abandoned building site or bridge and wondered what it would look like up close? What memories might be hidden in the over growth of trees? Nicholson drives the back roads of the state looking for such places. His images document “the forgotten, the collapsed and the condemned.” He looks for unused power lines, railroads and rusted gates, anything that says “Someone lived here.” He looks for features you don’t see used anymore: stonework and patterns in brick, and ornate brass door knobs.
Nicholson has created a series of photo essays that tell stories of nearly 70 abandoned locations throughout central Iowa. When he created the project he thought it would appeal to urban explorers, people who look for photo opportunities in abandoned locations. What he is discovering is that many of his followers enjoy the pictures for the memories they create.
Abandoned Iowa can be found at: http://abandonediowa.tumblr.com/ and on Facebook.
There is no charge for the program and refreshments will be served.
